Crypto-laundering – Not a Washing Machine. Yet

Image
Despite all the perception that crypto-atheists, naysayers and some movie-makers have, and spur, about crypto technology being a laundering nightmare, the truth is still tucked well inside some grey pile somewhere. So the movie is out. People in the crypto community have run out of eggs and tomatoes. People who are still catching up on what the word even means are trying to make up their minds. But despite all the polarizing reactions the Kurt Russell starrer ‘Crypto’ minted, its plot (that was all about the use of cryptocurrencies by a clandestine network for primarily laundering money) should make us think about the big issue in a way that is neither black or white, neither blue nor pink – which is, by neither dissing crypt ... 2019: A Happy - and New - Year for crypto-conmen and thieves so far

Image
The bubbly is unmistakably all around as experts and security -industry players take stock of new crypto-threats and malware attacks gaining steam and ground. Count the bottles of champagne popped and you would know. Get up and brush the dust away from last year’s attacks. If 2018 was abuzz with cryptocurrency wallets, Salty Spider malware trapping cryptocurrency users (specially Electrum BTC Wallets), BTC ransomware payment demands and crypto-jacking, 2019 is showing starker and stronger intersections between the orbits of cyber threats and cryptocurrency.  As always, the devil lurks in the fine print. But let us skim through the bigger fonts first. They will jump us through the hoops faster. Strap yourself for words like m ... Monero: Not THE Earliest Bird, and still getting the worm

Image
Why using open-source and GPU approaches is making Monero a smart second-mover in cryptocurrency forest? The First One gets the Oyster. The Second One gets the Shell. ORPioneers get Arrows. Settlers get the Land. Yes, like everything in life there are two ways to look at anything. Being the first one in any space endows that brave soldier with a quiver of advantages and that much-craved thing called eponymous-brand-weight. Bitcoin is synonymous to cryptocurrency for the average layman. That counts. But it can also mean a lot of arrows on the first person’s body. Bitcoin did not change the way we think about money and speed of transactions. It capsized it. It came as a seismic force that totally, and unrecognizably, upended ... Fishing on the skating rink

Image
We know that crypto world is currently going through the winter phase and there are not much thrilling news around. Obviously, when old and experienced fishermen are sitting in the cosy armchairs at some bar in front of the fireplace, they will inevitably get tipsy and start telling the old salty tales about 3-meter tunas that they caught once and how they will catch the 5-meter fish next summer. So did Roger Ver with his fishy version of Bitcoin, during one of the latest episode on Bitcoin.com’s YouTube channel, claiming that: “Anything Bitcoin (BTC) Can Do, Bitcoin Cash (BCH) Can Do Better” Yes, we all agree with that statement because we don"t even want to argue anymore. We"ve seen proofs that bitcoin cash"s network being hig ... Read more about " Fishing on the skating rink " on coinatory.com

Warning! Fake Monero called Monero Rings

Image
A project called Monero Rings advertises itself on the sites monero-rings.org and myxrmwallet.com. Monero Rings is positioning itself as an “improved version” of Monero, promising fast transactions, scalability, improved mining and even non-interchangeable tokens. It all sounds great, but the fact that the options that have been promised have emerged from nowhere is suspicious. The fake project was recently revealed by the Guarda wallet company, whose specialists saw that the project code is simply a clone of the Monero code. They also found that one web form sends phrases for recovery to their own site servers, allowing fraudsters to access private keys and steal funds. Four days after the exposure, Monero Rings resources ar ... Read more about " Warning! Fake Monero called Monero Rings " on coinatory.com

Monero: something strange is going on

Image
CEO of Lunar Digital Assets, Han Yoon wrote an article, warning that Monero network possibly showing signs of an imminent attack. The main point is the strange increase in hashpower. Starting from January 1st, 2019 it"s constantly growing - from 322,7Mh/s up to 781 Mh/s (February 5th). It"s an enormous growth and, in fact, the hashpower was never that high since the April 5th, 2018 - the day when Cryptonight V8 algorithm was implemented during the Lithium Luna update. You can check the actual hashpower here. The whole situation doesn"t seem to be strange and dangerous now. But considering the fact that Monero is an ASIC-resistant coin, there"s less space for the explanation of such a strange behavior. Another fact - Monero ... US sanctions against Iranian Bitcoin addresses: an important precedent

Image
Last week, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), a structure within the US Treasury, added two Bitcoin addresses to the sanctions list (the so-called List of Special Categories and Prohibited Persons). The office announced that these wallets are associated with two citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Khorashadizadeh and Mohammad Ghorbaniyan. These sanctions, the first of its kind, are part of a campaign conducted by the American authorities to monitor and restrict digital activities, including money laundering and cybercrime. In addition, OFAC said it would monitor the exchanges that carried out the transactions of sanctioned persons: “We publish the addresses of digital currencies in order to identify the attackers ... Disappointed by crypto jacking, hackers returned to ransomware

Image
Malwarebytes experts believe that the ransomware became the favourite method of crypto hackers once again, although in the recent past they preferred crypto jacking. Experts believe that the reason for the change of tactics was a prolonged decline in the cryptocurrency market, as well as new measures to protect against hidden mining. Yet another reason for that might be The Monero Malware Response, initiated by Monero community as this coin was mostly used in crypto jacking because it makes hackers almost impossible to find. Sia: ASIC wars, bricking the Bitmain and Innosilicon ASICs

Image
Here goes another chapter of ASIC wars. This time, Sia is under attack and is striking back with the v1.3.6 hardfork. This hardfork will reset Sia"s Proof-of-Work function. This will make ASICs by Bitmain and Innosilicon useless. The whole story started with the Bitmain that announced their ASIC miner for Sia network just 10 days before shipping. That was the announcement that almost caused the civil war in Sia community. Why? In June 2017, we announced that Sia would be pursuing ASICs, and that Nebulous (parent company of Sia) would be sp ... Monero: new challenges

Image

Vitalik Buterin about EOS, Bitcoin, Monero, Zcash and Ethereum

Image
Ethereum Creator, Vitalik Buterin shared his thoughts on which of the blockchain systems of the system is the most promising in his opinion. In a new video on Zcash YouTube channel, Buterin explained why he is against blockchains with a single decision-making body, such as EOS, where users select representatives who provide the functioning of the network. A couple of years ago, I would most likely have supported Tezos-EOS, who believe that the blockchain needs to be managed. But now? I"m totally against it, I think it"s a crazy ...
